모든 사람들은 그래픽 노블이 오늘날 가장 창의적이고 현대적인 스토리텔링을 할 수 있는 수단이라고 알고 있다. ‘Gosh! Comics’는Berwick가에 새로 생긴 가게이다. 그리고 가장 만화팬들이 가장 많이 가는 ‘쿨’한 장소이다. – 각나라의 재미있는 책들과 작가 싸인이 있는 책들이 있고, 오리지널 아트작품들의 전시도 함께 한다.

Paul Gravett, Graphic Novels: Stories to change your life 의 작가는2010년에LCC에서 GMD(graphic and media design) 학사 학생들을 위한 강연을 했었고, 국제적으로 떠오르는 장르와 다양한 포맷의 등장에 대해 토론한 적 있다. Paul은LCC에서 재능있는 학생들에게 스토리텔링 기술을 발전시킬 수 있는 워크샵에 참여할 수 있는 기회를 주고 있다. GMD 일러스트레이션학과3학년에 재학중인Lisa Grant는 현재Professional Studies 디플로마과정을 시작하였고 이번 워크샵에 참여한다.

Lisa는 그래픽 노블리스트로서 실력을 키울 수 있는 Artsadmin이라는 그룹에서 진행하는 여름프로젝트에 참가했다. 프로듀서로서 처음 시작부터 마지막 단계까지 아티스트들과 함께 작업을 한다. 그들은 제작하고 서포트하고 홍보하는 일을 하는데 종종 국제적으로 다른 그룹들과 함께 진행하기도 한다. 프로젝트는 항상 다르기 때문에 하나로 정의하기는 힘들다. 아트라는 형태 아래 연극 분야, 비주얼 아트, 댄스, 라이브아트, 퍼포먼스 등 이 포함이 되어 진행된다. 그 프로젝트가 무엇이던 간에 그들은 다른 아티스트들을 도와 창의적이고 새롭고 독창적인 작업을 하고 있다.

Lisa 코멘트: “Artsadmin은18-25달 간의 Mark Storor이 이번과 저번년도에 주최한 긴 여름 프로젝트이다. 10명의 신진아티스트들은 이번 여름 프로젝트에 선발되었는데Storor는 그는 우리가 위험을 감수하고 창의적으로 작업하는 것을 보고 뽑았다고 말했다. 우리가 했던 작업은 내가 저전에는 한 적 없었던 것들이었고Storor은 진부한 것들로부터 어떻게 아름답게 만들 수 있는지를 보여주었다. 그는 우리 서로가 마음을 터놓는 것에 대해 강조하며 끝날 무렵까지 서로 친구로서 함께 작업하기를 바랬다. 우리의 파이널8시간 가량의 퍼포먼스를 보러 오는 모든 이들은 이 공연을 보면서 즐거울 것이고 마음을 뺏겨 버릴 것 이다. ”

Everyone knows that graphic novels are the hottest and most innovative aspect of contemporary storytelling at the moment with great new magazines and books being published every day – it’s an area of passionate interest. ‘Gosh! Comics’ have just opened a brand new store in Berwick Street and it is the coolest place to hang out for fans of all kind – it’s full of exciting publications from all over the world and it has regular exhibitions of original artwork and author book signings.

Paul Gravett, author of ‘Graphic Novels: Stories to change your life‘ gave a lecture to first year BA Graphic and Media Design (GMD) students at LCC in 2010 and discussed the international rise of the genre and its emergence in multiple new formats. Paul has kindly offered LCC the opportunity to feed talented students into a new workshop scheme to develop their story telling ability. Lisa Grant, third year BA GMD illustrator, currently undertaking the Diploma in Professional Studies has been selected to undertake this round of workshops.

Lisa was selected to be part of the summer project run by the  ‘Artsadmin’ organisation to develop her skills as a graphic novelist. As producers, ‘Artsadmin’ work with artists from the first seeds of an idea to its final realisation. They produce, support and promote projects in the UK and internationally, often in partnership with other organisations. Their projects are often hard to define and always different, they cross art forms including theatre, visual arts, dance, live art and performance. Whatever the project, what excites them is helping artists make work that is inventive, unusual, and often extraordinary.

Lisa comments on her experience:

“Artsadmin run a month long Summer Project for 18 – 25 year olds every year headed by an established artist who, this year and last, was Mark Storor. Ten young artists were selected for this year’s Summer Project after taking part in taster days, Storor said he chose us because we were the only ones who took risks in the work we did on those days. The work we did with him was unlike anything I’ve ever done before, Storor showed us how to make beautiful things out of the most mundane objects and concepts. He put great emphasis on the importance of the group opening up to each other and by the end we were all determined to stay friends and perhaps even to collaborate again. Everyone who came to our final eight hour durational performance was delighted, someone called it ‘mind blowing’.”
